Research context

Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid cyclic neuropeptide (a nonapeptide) featuring an intramolecular disulfide bridge between two cysteine residues. In vitro and in animal models it has been characterized as an agonist at the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), a class A G-protein-coupled receptor that couples primarily to Gq/11 and phospholipase C signaling, with reported cross-reactivity at vasopressin receptor subtypes.

Studies in isolated cells and rodent models have examined OXTR binding kinetics, intracellular calcium mobilization, receptor desensitization, and smooth-muscle tissue responses in ex vivo preparations. Analytical work typically employs reversed-phase HPLC and LC-MS/MS methods to characterize peptide identity, purity, and stability.
